The People's Palace: Economy and Trade in Glasgow

In the 18th century, Glasgow became the workshop of the Empire. The glory of the city is based on its different industries:
-The tobacco industry made the fortunes of Lords who were trading with the American colonies. It became the first Tobacco industry in the world and fifty percent of tobacco imports came from Glasgow.
-The alcohol industry with the exports of beer and whisky all over the world began in the 18th century and was very important.
-The cotton industry with the weaving of cotton and linen was successfully booming at the end of the 18th century.
-Exportation : Glaswegians made pottery, candles, silver, glass, pewter and luxury goods which were exported to America.
The prosperity of Glasgow depended on successful business dealings and investments on new and expanding industries until the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Au dix-huitième siècle, Glasgow devient l'atelier de l'empire. La gloire de la ville est basée sur les différentes industries:

La prosperité de Glasgow dépend du succès des echanges du travail et de nouveaux investissements et des industries en expansion entre la fin du dix- neuvième siècle et le début du vingtième siècle.
