The People's Palace: Entertainment and Sports

During our visit at the People's Palace, we saw that the Glaswegians of Glasgow Green have had many kinds of entertainment from the 18th to the 21st century. They became interested in entertainment right from the 18th century. First alcohol and tobacco became popular habits and the bourgeoisie was attracted by these new fashion trends. Then, they got interested in physical activities like dancing. That began at the end of the 19th century when a lot of people wanted to learn how to dance. At this time, if you didn't know how to dance, you were not regarded as a gentleman or a proper lady. The interest in sports gained in popularity in the mid 20th century with football and boxing. The Glaswegians have always supported the two football teams of the city: The Celtic Glasgow and the Glasgow Rangers. As for boxing, Benny Lynch won four world championship fight titles. Then television and electronic games invaded the lives of Glaswegians and they still do. Today, especially for our teachers, we interviewed some Glaswegians to know if they had the same types of entertainment and they confirmed it but they are trying to do more sports rather than drink beer.

Durant notre visite au People's Palace, nous vîmes que les habitants de Glasgow Green avaient eu beaucoup de sortes de divertissements, du 18ème au 21ème siècle. Ils commencèrent à s'interesser aux divertissements dès le 18ème siècle. Premièrement, l'alcool et le tabac devinrent des habitudes populaires, et la bourgeoisie était attirée par ces nouvelles tendances à la mode. Ensuite, ils furent intéréssés par les activités physiques comme la danse. Ceci commença à la fin du 19ème siècle quand beaucoup de gens voulaient apprendre à danser. A cette époque, si vous ne saviez pas danser, vous n'étiez pas vus comme un vrai gentleman ou une vraie dame . L'intérêt pour le sport gagna en popularité au milieu du 20ème siècle, avec le football et la boxe. Les habitants de Glasgow ont souvent supporté les deux équipes de football de la ville: les 'Celtic Glagow' et les 'Glasgow Rangers'. Comme pour la boxe, Benny Lynch gagna quatre titres de combats du championnat du monde. Puis, la télévision et les jeux électroniques envahirent les vies des habitants; et le font encore. Aujourd'hui, spécialement pour nos professeurs, nous avons interviewé quelques habitants de Glasgow, pour savoir s'ils avaient les mêmes types de divertissements, et ils ont confirmé, mais essaient de faire plus de sport qu'ils ne boivent de bière.
